The Joy of Pets

Ever notice how just being around a dog can shift your mood? Science backs this up our four-legged companions do more than just warm our hearts; they actively improve our health. They lower stress, boost happiness, and make us move more. Basically, dogs are like furry little wellness coaches, minus the overpriced memberships and exhausting pep talks.

Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to have a dog. My sister had major allergies, so I was stuck admiring them from a safe (and sneeze-free) distance. But I always knew that one day I’d have a dog of my own. Fast forward to when I bought the ranch, and that day finally arrived.

Enter Blu, my Border Collie and, without question, the sweetest, smartest creature in the dog universe. I didn’t find Blu. He found me. Well, technically, the kids found Blu’s sister on Instagram and declared, Mom, we found our dog! And just like that, Blu became part of the family.

Now, Blu isn’t just a pet he’s a full-time ranch employee. His job? Herding workers, keeping everyone in line, and making sure productivity stays at an all-time high. He’s the ranch’s unofficial foreman and, somehow, also its most beloved employee.

But beyond his impressive work ethic, Blu is my shadow, my travel-free companion, and the one who nudges me outside when I’m too deep in emails. He doesn’t just look at me he sees me. That deep, soulful stare that says: forget the spreadsheets, let’s go chase something.

Now, I understand why dogs are essential in hospitals and retirement homes. They get us. And, as it turns out, they’re also one of the best health hacks around.

1. Stress Reduction:
Petting a dog lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) and boosts oxytocin (the love hormone). Translation? Less stress, more feel-good vibes.

2. Built-In Fitness Routine:
Who needs a personal trainer when you have a dog? Daily walks, zoomies, and spontaneous games of fetch keep you moving and your heart and step count will thank you.

3. A Masterclass in Mindfulness:
Dogs don’t stress about tomorrow’s deadlines or yesterday’s awkward email. They’re all about the now, and they teach us to be, too.

4. Heart Health & Longevity:
Studies show that dog owners have lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol, and even live longer. (So yes, your pup might just be your personal longevity coach.)

For those of us who are passionate about wellness and longevity, adding a dog to your life might just be the best decision you make. They remind us to move, laugh, and love—three things we could all use more of. Please meet my sweet dog blue in the video below.

Do you have a dog that keeps you accountable for your health? Drop their name (and, let’s be real, a picture) below. I’d love to meet them.

To your vitality,

Lizanne
