Intermittent Fasting & Women
There’s been a lot of buzz lately around intermittent fasting and for good reason.
Research continues to show how strategic fasting can support metabolic health, cellular repair, and even longevity. But when it comes to women, fasting isn’t one-size-fits-all. In fact, there’s a lot of nuance, and the most important thing we can do is tune in, not tune out.
Here’s what I’ve been exploring and what I want every woman to feel empowered to know. Let’s start with the basics:
If you’re pregnant, fasting should not be part of your routine. Your body is growing a human it needs consistent, nourishing fuel, not extended windows of restriction. The same goes for postpartum and breastfeeding phases. This is a season of replenishment, not deprivation.
Fasted training can work well for some women especially in the luteal phase or earlier in the day when cortisol is naturally higher. But it’s not for everyone. If you feel dizzy, fatigued, or stressed after training fasted, that’s your body speaking. Fuel is not the enemy under-eating is.
One of the biggest myths I see out there is that fasting alone is the magic bullet. But it’s your total caloric intake, your nutrient density, and your macronutrient balance that make the real difference. If you’re fasting all day but not eating enough protein, healthy fats, or micronutrients, your body will eventually burn out. It’s not about restriction it’s about intelligent nourishment.
Women’s hormones shift week to week. Fasting aggressively during the second half of your cycle (after ovulation) can increase stress and disrupt sleep, energy, or even fertility. Instead, consider adjusting your fasting windows or focusing on gentle nourishment in those phases.
Most of the fasting research has been conducted on men. Women are biologically different and our fasting approach should be, too.
So, whether you're exploring fasting for energy, longevity, or weight management, do it with self-awareness and grace.
Ask yourself:
→ Am I feeling energized or depleted?
→ Am I recovering well from workouts?
→ Am I sleeping deeply and waking refreshed?
→ Am I honoring my body’s signals not overriding them?
If the answer is no, it may be time to pause, adjust, and re-nourish.
Because true wellness isn’t about extremes it’s about balance, intuition, and sustainability.
Let’s keep learning, evolving, and showing up for ourselves and each other with compassion and strength.
