DIY Home Cold Plunge

After initially struggling to stay in a cold plunge for three minutes at 38 degrees, I explored cryotherapy.

Now, I'm revisiting the challenge of cold water immersion with a homemade setup. Utilizing my old jacuzzi, 30 bags of ice, and an unused freezer, I managed to create a refreshing cold plunge. Although the water didn't hold the cold well initially, this setup allowed me to test my limits and work towards a temperature of 36 degrees.

Here’s how I did it, step by step:

1. Choose Your Container - My vessel was my old jacuzzi, but a livestock trough or deep chest freezer works well too. Ensure it's clean and free from chemicals.

2. Prepare the Space - Place your container in a water-friendly location, such as a backyard, garage, or bathroom. Ensure the area is safe and non-slippery.

3. Fill with Water - Fill the container with water. Using a garden hose can make this process more convenient.

4. Add Ice - Start by adding ice to achieve a water temperature between 50-59°F (10-15°C). Use a thermometer to monitor and adjust the temperature as needed.

5. Test and Adjust - Before plunging, test the water temperature. Add more ice if too warm, or let it sit if too cold until you reach the ideal temperature.

6. Insulate (Optional) - Consider insulating your container to maintain the cold temperature for longer periods. This is optional but helpful for consistent use.

🦺 Safety Tips:
- Begin with shorter immersion times (1-2 minutes) and gradually increase as your body adapts to the cold.
- Exit the water immediately if you feel any discomfort or extreme cold.
- And as I’ve mentioned before, make sure you consult with a healthcare professional before starting cold plunges if you have any medical conditions.

Building a DIY home cold plunge is an affordable way to experience the benefits of cold water immersion without the initial investment in a cold plunge machine. Starting with this homemade version can help you determine if this wellness practice is right for you. So, why not take the plunge and dive into a new realm of health and wellness? Let me know if you try it out; I’d love to hear your experience!

To your vitality,
Lizanne
