The Role of Gratitude During Crisis

In times of crisis, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed by fear, uncertainty, and loss. Whether it’s the wildfires in Los Angeles or personal challenges, these moments test our resilience. Amid the chaos, gratitude offers a powerful way to steady ourselves.

Gratitude goes beyond saying “thank you.” It’s about finding the good, even in heavy times. Research shows it improves mental health, lowers stress, and fosters connection—all vital during hardship. But how can we practice gratitude when life feels uncertain?

Here are a few ways:

1. Focus on What You Can Control
Crises often highlight what’s beyond our influence. Gratitude shifts our focus to small, positive actions—cooking a meal, supporting a neighbor, or taking a moment to breathe—helping us feel empowered.

2. Celebrate the Helpers
Fred Rogers said, “Look for the helpers.” In every crisis, acts of kindness remind us of the strength in community. Recognizing and thanking these helpers shifts our perspective from despair to hope.

3. Practice Daily Gratitude Rituals
Start or end your day listing three things you’re grateful for. Small joys—a kind word or a moment of peace—can anchor us in a gratitude mindset.

4. Find Beauty in Nature
Nature’s resilience offers hope. Even in devastation, life regenerates. Stepping outside to feel the sun or observe life’s cycles can inspire renewal.

5. Express Gratitude to Others
Reach out to someone who’s impacted you. A simple message of thanks strengthens bonds and uplifts both giver and receiver.

6. Lean Into Community
Community becomes our anchor in tough times. Sharing stories and support creates solidarity, reminding us of our collective strength.

During the recent fires, I’ve witnessed heartbreaking loss but also incredible acts of kindness—families opening their homes, volunteers offering time, and shared strength in quiet moments. These silver linings remind us that even in darkness, there is light.

Gratitude doesn’t dismiss pain but helps us honor the beauty and connections that sustain us. It fuels strength and hope for healing and rebuilding. Let’s take a moment today to pause and give thanks—for the big things, the little things, and all the moments in between. Together, we can move forward.

With gratitude,
