Thanksgiving: Let’s Eat!
While Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year, admittedly, it's the day I’m most likely to overindulge. As I eagerly await the arrival of my family, I'm reminded of how this holiday, while one of my favorites, can often leave us feeling less than our best.
Here's how we can navigate this day of feasting with a mindful approach, ensuring we enjoy every moment without the after-dinner regrets:
1. Start with a Protein-Rich Breakfast: A morning meal high in protein can be your secret weapon. It curbs hunger and sets a healthy tone for the day. I know many who believe they should try to fast before Thanksgiving dinner, but that actually can lead to you becoming ravenous and overeating. The more protein you eat earlier in the day, the more likely you’ll be to eat in moderation when it’s time to feast. Try an oatmeal with a scoop of protein instead, or an omelet.
2. Balance Your Plate: Incorporate a healthy portion of protein like turkey or tofu, alongside your favorite sides. Protein helps you feel full longer and keeps your energy levels steady.
3. Listen to Your Body: It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and lose track of your hunger cues. Eat slowly, savor each bite, and pause to check in with how you're feeling.
4. Enjoy the Experience: Remember, Thanksgiving is not just about the food, but about the warmth of being with loved ones. Enjoy the conversations, the laughter, and the shared moments.
5. It's Okay to Indulge: While being mindful of not overeating, remember it's a celebration. It's okay to enjoy your favorite dishes. The key is moderation, not deprivation.
6. Get Active Afterwards: I always love to take a walk with my dog, Blue, after dinner to help encourage digestion. Thanksgiving is no exception. While you may be feeling sleepy after dinner, encourage your family to join you for a walk or a light game after dinner. Not only does it help you kickstart digestion, but you can enjoy each other's company.
This Thanksgiving, as we gather around the table, let's cherish the food and the company with a balanced approach. Enjoy the flavors, the conversations, and the precious moments, keeping in mind that a happy Thanksgiving is one that leaves us feeling nourished in body and soul.
Wishing everyone a delightful, balanced, and joyful Thanksgiving!
