Happy New Year & Thoughts of Self-Care for 2024
As we prepare to step into 2024, it's natural to think about how we can make this year better than the last. There's a palpable sense of urgency to catch up and recover from burnout, and the thought of planning for the year can seem overwhelming. But I'm here to tell you that there are just four fundamental steps to focus on. Practiced daily, these four pillars will help you prosper: Eat, Sleep, Play, and Meditate.
I’ve only developed my propensity for self-care because I’ve been a certified workaholic most of my life. My usual M.O. involved working 18-hour days, wearing myself down to a nub. I remember the day that all changed, when a close friend of mine shared her secret to balance: going to business, she said, is like going to war. If you’re not strong and healthy, it doesn’t matter what strategy you implement – you’ve already lost. You have to take care of yourself.’
For me, self-care isn't just a buzzword; it's a necessity. I’ve found the best way to manage chaos is to anchor myself in a routine. This includes scheduling regular exercise, daily meditation, and being mindful about my media consumption. Watching the stock market daily or constantly tuning into the news can be emotionally draining, so I've learned to limit these activities.
Creating a Personal Self-Care Plan for 2024: Eat, Sleep, Play, and Meditate
Healthy Eating: Focus on organic, in-season foods. I aim for 20 grams of protein per meal while avoiding bad carbs and sugars. Nutrition is the foundation of our energy and health.
Quality Sleep: A recent study showed that a significant portion of Americans wake up feeling tired. Good sleep is crucial. Some tips I follow include hydrating well before bed, abstaining from alcohol two hours before sleeping, stopping caffeine intake by 2 PM, eating protein-rich dinners, and avoiding electronics an hour before bed. A cool, dark room can also enhance sleep quality.
Play and Relaxation: It's important to break away from work and enjoy life. Whether it's a game of chess or cards, find something that brings you joy and allows you to unwind.
Daily Meditation: Even a few minutes a day can clear your mind, improve focus, and enhance mental acuity. This has been instrumental in helping me be my best self.
